According to Yonhap News,

Car ferry route between Gwangyang and Japan

Passengers are boarding Gwangyang Beech, a car ferry of Gwangyang Ferry Co., Ltd. on January 23rd.

An international car ferry route is opened between Gwangyang and Japan.

Gwangyang Beech of Gwangyang Ferry departed Gwangyang Port for Port of Shimonoseki, Japan on 10 p.m. on January 23rd.

Gwangyang Beech is in the 16,000 ton class with the capacity of 600 passengers and 200 TEU containers. Gwangyang Beech will make a voyage for 11 hours with 594 passengers on board and arrive at Shimonoseki Port at 9 a.m. on January 24th.

Gwangyang Beech will ply Gwangyang Port and Shimonoseki Port three times a week. It departs Gwangyang Port on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, and enters Shimonoseki Port on Sundays, Moji Port on Tuesdays, and Shimonoseki Port on Thursdays.

The car ferry will depart Japan on Mondays at Shimonoseki Port, Wednesdays at Moji Port, and Fridays at Shimonoseki Port.

The departure and arrival time from Gwangyang Port to Shimonoseki port is 10 p.m. and 9 a.m. on the next day. The arrival time to Moji Port is 8:30 a.m. on the next day.

Gwangyang City and Jeonnam-do (South Jeolla Province) have strived to open a car ferry route between Korea and Japan along with Gwangyang Bay Area Free Economic Zone Authority, Korea Container Terminal Authority, and other relevant agencies since April last year in a bid to attract more Japanese tourists to large-scale international events such as Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea, Suncheon Bay Garden Expo 2013, Formula 1 Korean Grand Prix, etc.

An official of Gwangyang City said “the two ports are distribution hubs of agricultural and fishery products in the southwestern Japan, and gateways to tourism in Kyushu,” and added “the opening of the route between Gwangyang and Japan is expected to bring about big change in human exchange and trade with Japan, which have been mainly concentrated in Busan.”
