According to Yonhap News,

What is an electric vehicle powered by a direct drive motor?

An official of a direct drive motor manufacturer which singed an MOU with Yeonggwang-gun explains how a direct drive motor performs in an electric vehicle to Jeonnam Governor Park Jun-yeong and Yeonggwang County Governor Jeong Gi-ho at a square in front of Jeonnam Provincial Office on February 8th. Econex is a manufacturer of eco-friendly electric vehicles powered by direct drive motors, and plans to invest KRW 80 billion to establish an electric vehicle factory.

The world’s first production factory for electric vehicles powered by direct drive motors will be established in Yeonggwang, which have emerged into the hub of the eco-friendly electric vehicle industry.

County Governor Jeong Gi-ho of Yeonggwang signed an MOU with Econex, Ltd., a company conducting R&D and manufacturing electric vehicles, at Jeonnam Provincial office on February 8th. He also had a trial ride of an electric vehicle run by a direct drive motor, and held a demonstration of direct drive motors.

Econex plans to invest KRW 80.4 billion for the next two years to establish a production factory in Yeonggwang Daema General Industrial Complex and produce buses and trucks equipped with such motors.

Econex has developed direct drive motor systems jointly with e-Traction, a Dutch company. The technology enables electric vehicles to achieve twice or three times higher efficiency compared to other existing electric vehicles, as it directly drives vehicles.

Also, carbon dioxide emissions will be reduced by more than 50%, fuel consumption will be cut in half, and noises will decrease by 90% compared to diesel engine buses. Technologies have been developed to apply direct engine motors to buses, trucks, passenger cars, and electric forklift trucks.

Econex will first convert old buses and trucks into electric vehicles in the short term, and commercialize light electric buses, electric trucks, and electric passenger vehicles, whose development has been completed.

Yeonggwang-gun expects that the factory will generate about 500 jobs, contributing the regional economy.

County Governor Jeong Gi-ho said “Yeonggwang has attracted four electric vehicle manufacturers including Econex which are equipped with excellent technologies and competitiveness,” and added “we have gradually built foundation to venture into the world’s four largest electric vehicle markets which is the goal of the government.”

Yeonggwang-gun is the only one to be nurtured into the hub of electric vehicles among other guns. It plans to attract companies in the electric vehicle industry to Daema Industrial Complex to form an eco-friendly electric vehicle cluster.

Yeonggwang-gun made it possible that electric vehicles can run on all the roads within 60 km from the region except for some national highways and West Coast Highway, and is the first to purchase three electric vehicles as official vehicles among local governments in Korea.
