Writer administ Posted at 2011-03-30
According to Yonhap News,

Wando-gun, Jeonnam-do (South Jeolla Province) declared that it set out the goal to attract 5 million tourists this year. The region produces fresh marine products, boasts an archipelago, and has famous tourist attractions.

According to Wando-gun on March 11th, it achieved a remarkable result last year as 3 million people visited the region on the back of Cheongsando Island, designated as a Slow City,’ and newly developed tourism products. The goal of this year is to draw 5 million visitors by mainly promoting the maritime tourism industry.

‘The first slow road in the world’ of Cheongsando Island has been established as the top three walking paths in Korea along with Jeju Olle and Mt. Jirisan Dulle, and is expected to play a pivotal role in courting tourists this year.

In a bid to promote the region as a tourist attraction and ‘an island for health,’ 2011 Cheongsando Slow Walk Festival, a flagship walking festival in Korea, will be held for 23 days from April 8th at Cheongsando Island.

In May, Wando will hold ‘Jang Bogo Festival’ to honor Jang Bogo, a historical figure called the emperor of the sea, and ‘Jang Bogo Nationwide Mountain Bike Competition’ in the Sanghwangbong area which is the largest warm-temperate forest in Korea. These festivals heighten the expectation that the era of five million will begin this year.

Wando County Governor Kim Jong-sik said “Wando-gun has excellent marine tourism resources and various historical and cultural heritage which are our comparative edge,” and added “we are committed to make the region the hub of maritime tourism by promoting a productive and differentiated tourism industry.”
