According to Yonhap News,

- Five-year plan to nurture the biofood industry with the investment of KRW 183.8 billion

Jangheung-gun, Jeonnam-do (South Jeolla Province) has pushed forward the globalization of its eco-friendly agriculture, and plans to invest about KRW 180 billion in the area in the next five years.

According to Jangheung-gun on October 13th, it has devised the second five-year plan to foster the biofood industry (2010 ~ 2014) to obtain certification of pesticide-free agricultural products grown in over 55 % of its agricultural land. Jangheung-gun is committed to realizing the world-class organic ecoagriculture.

Jangheung-gun implemented the first five-year plan under which it achieved certification of environment-friendly farming for pesticide-free (2,895ha), organic (850ha), and low-pesticide agricultural products (3,113ha), which add up to 6,858ha or 54% of the total farmland.

Jangheung plans to get certification of pesticide-free agricultural products for 55% of its arable land in a bid to produce high-quality safe products rather than increasing the eco-friendly area.

To this end, it will invest a total of KRW 183.8 billion in 64 plans in six areas: KRW 137.3 billion in building the foundation for organic ecoagriculture; KRW 19.2 billion in processing, distribution, and export; KRW 25.3 billion in laying the basis of natural cycling agriculture.

Especially, the second plan focuses on consolidating the foundation for organic agriculture and developing the agricultural products into high value-added ones where the primary, secondary and tertiary industries are all combined.

Jangheung-gun attracted state-funded projects worth KRW 10 billion to the nearby areas of Jangheung dam last year. Under the projects, a regional eco-friendly agricultural complex was constructed, making Jangheung a leader in the natural cycling and eco-friendly agriculture.
