According to Yonhap News,
Abalone aquaculture district in Wando, Jeonnam was selected as this year's excellent district by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy.
Wando county said on September 29 that it was awarded KRW 100 million.
The total production of abalone increased from 4,300 tons in 2009 to 5,800 tons in 2010. Sales of abalone processing companies, employment also rose as well.
The number of fishing households that earn more than KRW 100 million stood at 1,497 households.
Wando possesses Korea's largest abalone farm, accounting for 81% of the national abalone production.
The county plans to strengthen the competitiveness of the district by advancing into foreign markets.
