Hampyeong Butterfly Festival for 12 Days from Apri

Writer administ Posted at 2011-04-22
According to Yonhap News,

The 13th Hampyeong Butterfly Festival, touted as one of the finest festivals in Korea, will take place at Hampyeong Expo Park for 12 days from April 29th to May 10th.

Visitors will learn how much the environment is precious to our life while enjoying butterflies and flowers and experiencing the mystery of the nature at the festival. The festival began in 1999, and is said to have opened a new horizon in regional festivals.

This year’s theme is ‘Happy World Along With Butterflies.’ Outdoor eco-system experience hall will offer opportunities to fly butterflies; local residents can direct cultural performances with regional cultural and art groups; and various market places will help boost the regional economy.

At the eco-friendly agricultural hall, visitors will be able to see about 20 dak paper items describing four seasons of rural areas and 60 items imitating plants printed in elementary school textbooks. Halls will be set up to display birds, bees, reptiles, amphibians, shellfish, crustaceans, and silkworms. There will be more interesting attractions at the festival.

A fleshy plant hall will boast about 2,500 species of fleshy plants and a 150-meter-long aroma tunnel made up of herbs. A potted plant hall will show about 200 potted plants and offer potting classes. A golden bat hall will display a golden bat sculpture made of 162kg pure gold.

Visitors can also experience mudfish catching, soot of barley and peas, livestock herding in a traditional way, and traditional folk games. The festival’s programs also include handicraft of butterflies, animal farm experience, kite making, horse riding, pottery baking, and bamboo pot making.

Erth, an Australia-based visual and physical performance company, will conduct ‘nonverbal insect performance on street’ twice a day, making the festival a global event.

The reservation for admission to the festival started on March 28th on Ticketlink at a price down by 10%. During the festival, KTX will operate six trains between Yongsan Station and Hampyeong Station every day.

Hampyeong County Governor An Byeong-ho said on April 12th “in the preparation of the festival, we have focused on making sure visitors will be satisfied with the quality and the regional economy will get substantial benefit,” and added “we believe that people will have great experience at the festival where they will feel new hope and happiness alongside beautiful and clean natural environment of Hampyeong.”
