Writer administ Posted at 2011-03-11
According to Yonhap News,

Marine technologies of Jeonnam-do (South Jeolla Province) will be transferred to developing countries in Southeast Asia such as Tuvalu, Fiji, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines which have suffered from tsunami and other climate change related disasters.

According to Jeonnam-do, the first-year education and training program of ‘Yeosu Project’ will be implemented from February 14th to 26th. ‘Yeosu Project’ is designed to support developing countries in the marine sector.

The Korean government promised ‘Yeosu Project’ to the international community when it bid for Expo 2012 Yeosu, and the goal is to help resolve ocean problems faced with developing countries through international cooperation.

A total of KWR 10 billion will be invested to the project by 2012, and Jeonnam-do has selected 12 tasks (seven in R&D, five in education and training), after accepting 109 tasks from coastal countries in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific.

Major programs include ‘eco-friendly port technologies’ and ‘eco-friendly fishing technologies’ in this month, and ‘marine ranch and ecological resources in the coastal areas’ and ‘offshore fish farming’ for next month.

The first training program of ‘Yeosu Project’ is two-week long, consisting of lectures, practices, and on-site visits at Korea Institute of Construction Technology Education, MarineCom, Overseas Fisheries Cooperation Center, etc. with the participation of about 50 marine experts and officials from five countries of Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Fiji, and Tuvalu.

An official of the organizing committee said “we plan to implement cooperation projects with international organizations and research institutes in the maritime sector in order to improve results and differentiate our projects with existing development assistant projects.”
