Writer administ Posted at 2010-12-02
According to Yonhap News,

Jeonnam-do (South Jeolla Province) has increased its support for technology development in order to develop the Province into the mecca for space robots. As part of the efforts, the Province established ‘Space Robot Council.’

According to Jeonnam on November 20th, ‘Space Robot Council’ was founded on November 19th with the participation of about 40 robot experts in the industry, academia, research institute, and government including Chairman Lee Seok-han, Head Director Cho Yeong-hun of Space Robot Council, and CEO Kim Gyeong-hwan of NT Research.

The Council is consisted of companies including Hyundai Heavy Industries, LIG NEX-1, and Hanwha; professors from KAIST, Korea University, Sungkyunkwan University, Hanyang University, etc.; about 100 experts of Defense Acquisition Program Administration, Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, Korea Electronics Technology Institute, Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, etc.

The Council will be responsible for encouraging R&D on space robots and new technologies; accelerating the commercialization of domestic and foreign space robot technologies; carrying out medium- and large- scale national research projects on space robots; and attracting the composition industry in relation to Naro Space Center and space robot companies home and abroad.

The Province established Space Robot Research Center at Chonnam National University in July, and signed MOUs with the Robot Research Institute of Chonnam National University, Korea Institute for Robot Industry Advancement and Korea Association of Robot Industry in a bid to develop this region into the mecca for space robots

An official of Jeonnam said “the establishment of the Council will serve as the foundation for growing the space robot industry and nurturing it into a national new growth engine,” and added “we will invite robot experts home and abroad to hold the first international space robot symposium on December 3rd, where we will take a look at the current space robot development and its prospects.”
