Korean Tea Museum Opens in Boseong County

Writer administ Posted at 2010-09-28
Boseong County in Jeollanam-do, which produces the most green tea in Korea, opened a tea museum on Saturday (Sept. 11).

The Korean Tea Museum, which is the first of its kind to be run by a local government, opened its doors to the public directly after the opening ceremony. The museum is located in the Korea Tea & Sori Culture Park in Boseong, and is 4,525 square meters in size. It has special rooms for storage, displays, and experiential programs in its five story building.

The first floor of the museum is a ‘tea culture room’ that explains the basics of tea, tea’s health benefits, the differences in teas from around the world, and the development of tea industry. The second floor explains the history of tea from ancient to modern times, with displays of tea sets from different cultures. The third floor allows visitors to directly experience the tea cultures of different countries, including Korea, China, Japan, and Europe.

In the near future, Boseong also intends to build a botanic garden at the Korea Tea & Sori Culture Park, adorned with various tea plants from around the world.

“The museum will be a space to experience the history and culture of Korea’s tea industry,” said the mayor of Boseong County, Chung Jong-hai. “I hope the museum further enhances Boseong’s image as the home of best green tea in Korea.”

Other well known tea museums in Korea include the Beautiful Tea Museum in Jongno-gu, Seoul and Amore Pacific’s O’Sulloc Tea Museum in the city of Seogwipo on Jeju Island.
