Chairman Kang Dong-suk of the Organizing Committee for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea visited Russia and Poland from September 12 to 18, 2010 to promote participation of the two countries in Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea.

Accompanied by a delegation including Ambassador Bae Young-han, Director General for External Cooperation and Mr. Chung In-gyun, Deputy Director-General of the Bilateral Trade Bureau of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Chairman Kang met with relevant senior government officials and business leaders during the 5-day trip.

In Moscow, the delegation met with Mr. Vladimir Strashko, Vice-president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Mr. Stanislav Naumov, Deputy Minister for Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation to discuss about the country’s participation in the Yeosu Expo.

Having served as the Commissioner for two previous Expositions, Vice-president Strashko showed strong enthusiasm for the cause behind World Expositions, and concurred with the Korean delegation on the thematic significance of the Yeosu Expo and the importance of Russia’s participation in the fair.

Deputy Minister Naumov was also positive about his government’s participation in the Yeosu Expo, and affirmed that Russia, with abundant ocean resources and advanced technologies, will have much to share with the world in the ocean-themed global fair.

In Warsaw, the official group was welcomed by Mr. Jan Borkowski, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Rafal Baniak, Undersecretary of State of the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Poland.

The Polish officials expressed that the Yeosu Expo would offer an important opportunity to bolster the bilateral ties between Korea and Poland. They said the government would make its final decision based on the review of its performance in the Expo 2010 and promised to give full support in this process.

As of October 5, 2010, 68 countries and 3 international organizations have confirmed their participation in Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea.
