- Remaking, “Let’s cooperate for local development with a strong sense of responsibility and a creative mind,” in a kick-off meeting on January 6, 2020.
On January 6, 2020, Kim Yung-rok, the governor of Jeollanamdo Province, remarked, “This year, I hope that every government official will serve as a small hero, collaborating with each other based on a venture spirit, to contribute to the revitalization of regional economy by achieving three key tasks including attracting fourth-generation storage-ring light sources.”
In a kick-off meeting for 2020, Governor Kim mentioned the first two topics, celebrating the Year of the Rat, the symbol of diligence, fertility, and prosperity. One is a spirit of “MIGHTY MICE” (small superheroes), and the other is a venture spirit along with a horizontal, autonomous, and creative mind-set.
The “MIGHTY MICE” was selected as a key slogan for 2020 by the SNU Consumer Trends Analysis Center. This slogan comes from a short animation produced in the 1940s, which shows that when wolves attack sheep, Mighty Mouse punishes them.
The governor said, “Small mice and powerful heroes seem like a mismatched combination, but if small but strong hardworking mice pull together, they can overcome any crisis. When each small hero becomes a hero in a team or furthermore in a region while cooperating with each other based on a venture spirit, they will surely create tremendous synergistic effects.”
He also said, “It is neither possible nor desirable for the Governor alone to direct all matters of the provincial administration,” adding, “Government officials should be equipped with a venture spirit. That is, they should have a sense of ownership, thinking themselves as governors to creatively implement their responsibilities. I want them to actively communicate with their people in different settings, reflecting their voices to generate new ideas for regional development and improve the existing duties.”
Lastly, Governor Kim Yung-rok mentioned, “Our cooperative efforts last year allowed us to move up two notches in the Integrity Assessment. Moreover, the full-swing realization of the ‘Clean Jeonnam, Blue Economy’ vision has led to the establishment of a foothold for a regional economy.” He also emphasized, “To speed up regional growth, we should concentrate our energy on attracting storage-ring light sources to the Naju Industrial-Academic-Research Cluster, holding the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 28) to the UNFCCC in 1 of the 10 cities or provinces in the southern central region of South Korea, and establishing a medical school including a national medical school of public health care.”
